Course Description

This course takes a deeper dive into how developmental editing for fiction manuscripts differs from that of nonfiction manuscripts; it is not a course for beginners. Students are introduced to the elements of fiction that inform every work of fiction, regardless of the genre, and how developmental editors work with authors to strengthen a manuscript. The elements of fiction explored include: plot and story line, conflict and tension, character development, dialogue, point of view, voice and tone, pacing and readability, and consistency. Each element of fiction must be identified and understood in the context of a given manuscript. This can be difficult when there are few hard-and-fast rules, but the challenge is also the reward.

"Online self-paced" refers to course start and end dates. "Online fixed date" refers to the synchonous session schedule fully available under "Section Notes."
